Fail Blog, Fail Owned Pwned Pictures, is the latest creation to join the LOL web community, giving us the best/worst of viral photos, videos and ads. For those of you web newbies (are there still any?), the terms ‘owned’ and ‘pwned’ refer to getting told, one-upped or taken for a foolio, as in “You just got pwned!”. Okay, now that we’ve covered proper interweb verbage, plz to enjoy the world of the internet’s version of ‘Headlines‘.

Frank Lloyd Wright. FTW.

I don’t know what it is, but I declare this the Summer of Frank. First up: the Guggenheim currently has an exhibit entitled Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, featuring small-scale models of Wright’s famous houses. The models, like the one designed to represent Wright’s Herbert Jacobs House #1, were built by Brooklyn-based design firm, Situ Studio.

Also very cool in Frank Lloyd Wright and Guggenheim news is Lego’s new line of FLW-inspired building sets. Once you’ve got these, you can create your own little model of his iconic buildings, including New York’s beloved Guggenheim Museum and FallingWater in Pennsylvania.

SPEAKING of FallingWater (see how it’s all connecting?), the house Wright famously designed over a waterfall for the Kaufman family in 1934, my husband and I were able to stop by and take the tour during a recent drive to the Midwest last month. Being a bit of a FLW freak, my Midwestern-born husband (hence the trip to visit the fam) and I both were not dissapointed. Every element of the house is designed to perfection. Every piece of furniture a work of art, and the iconic image of the house that is so familiar to most is what the house actually looks like from every angle, in whatever direction you take. Plus, it’s settled right in the middle of Pennsylvania countryside, which we’re also partial to, since we like to spend weekends there. We only wish we could’ve ushered out all the other visitors and tour guides, so we could take off our shoes and make ourselves at home. Lounge on the chaise. Gaze out at the falls and the forest. Anybody got a few million we could borrow? Check out my photos from my trip below!

New Hope In The Middle East

President Obama added another page in the history books for himself and his presidency. Earlier today, the President spoke at Cairo University in Egypt, addressing the issues affecting Muslim-Jewish-Christian relations. Some commenters are noting his bold choice to fault attitudes from all sides toward one another, and the issues each faces, such as anti-Semitism. In small, but somewhat daring ways, Obama even called out Israel for some of their mistakes. Even with his stern treatment of all parties, he kept the speech (of course) hopeful. The crowd, which one might assume to be mostly made up of press and students, reacted positively to the thoughts expressed by our president. Perhaps a little surprising was the audibly strong reaction of the audience (students, perhaps) at Obama’s mention of the importance of democracy n the world. In the end, it would not be at all shocking to learn that the ‘spread of democracy‘ could be accomplished by someone toting hope and ideas, rather than missiles and bombs. Am I right?

The second annual World Science Festival is taking place (once again) in New York City from Wednesday, June 10 until Sunday, June 14. If you yawn at the thought of hearing a lecture about ‘The Subtle Science of Emptiness’, there’s still plently of fun topics to entice you to one of the more dynamic events. Alan Alda, who also worked the festival last year, will be leading a few discussions, including one about the human experience, as well as hosting the celeb-packed Opening Night Gala. From Parallel Universes to discovering bio diversity in your favorite NYC borough, the festival’s got it goin on, with discussion panels that include the top lecturers/researchers/personalities in all things science. Plus, Harrison Ford. So check out the festival’s schedule and get to geeking out the way only New Yorkers can. Personally, I cannot wait to be sitting only feet from Neil DeGrasse Tyson!

Mullet With Headlights

Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ is one of those pivotal songs from the 80s that becomes something new to each generation. There was even a cheezy dance mix in the 90s. Shudder. Well, the latest generation of Eclipse afficionados got a lot more clever with their spin, creating a literal translation of the ultra bizarre video (as was the way in early MTV days) of this rock ballad classic. The girl dubbing it is actually not bad, considering she totally gambled on matching up to Tyler’s powerhouse belting. Watch it once, and you’ll be singing, ‘Over-Surpised Guy’ all day. For the purists, here is a link to the original. Dare to enjoy.

Designer blog, Graficante (’El Blog’), mentioned Hyperakt on their blog for the exhibit we did in Geneva’s Flux Laboratory. They discuss our ‘New Hope’ posters and also the retrospective we included, which featured a highlight of Hyperakt’s work throughout the years. ‘De paso se dan la vuelta por la página de Hyperakt que trae trabajos muy buenos.’ If you don’t speak/read Spanish, they said they like us. They really like us. Take a look for yourself.
