The Story

Searching for an Emotional Connection

Nikon has historically catered to high-end, professional photographers and was seeking to establish a foothold among a wider audience in the growing digital consumer market. They hired DiNoto, a boutique NYC ad agency, to create an emotionally engaging experience and provide a forum for expression, exploration, connection and personal evolution through digital photography.

We worked with DiNoto to develop Nikon Illumination, a new, stand-alone web property and branded experience. Nikon Illumination was designed to empower photographers of all skill levels to share their images and engage in conversation around social issues and shared interests.

The Mechanics

The site functions as an online community comprised of several programs designed to encourage the use of photography as a tool for creative expression. It is comprised entirely of user-generated content so that users can take ownership over and truly engage in their experience.

Nikon Illumination puts great emphasis on pushing the boundaries of information visualization and enhancing the user experience through interactive navigation. Through the use of technologies like Flash and Papervision, the site will feel alive and tactile. Whether viewing image galleries, maps or comment feeds, users will be able to see new information populating the site in real time. Through these and other features, Nikon Illumination seeks to open our eyes to new ways of seeing the world, documenting and sharing our experiences, connecting with others, and using digital photography to affect positive change on ourselves and the world around us.

Our Involvement

We worked very intensely on this project for months to research and flesh out the basic concepts DiNoto had established into fully formed ideas, and we designed the user interface for all the sections of the site. After creating extensive site specification documents and preparations for the development process, the project was unfortunately put on hold due to the economic climate.
