SYRFILM

Without Hyperakt's genuine interest and disciplined guidance, we would never have been able to increase our web hits by over 600% and our attendance by 10%.

The Story

Launching a Lifelong Dream

We met Owen and Christine Shapiro, the founders of the Syracuse International Film and Video Festival (now SYRFILM), as they were preparing to get their project off the ground. They hoped to give voice to independent film makers and introduce upstate New York and the film industry to each other. The founders initially relied on pro-bono design work and had struggled to generate viable brand identity for the festival's inaugural year. We entered the scene and offered to help. Six years later and still counting, our relationship has stretched far and wide.

Brand Guardians

Each year, the film festival poster serves as the guiding identity for the event and is extended into tickets, advertisements and merchandise, the festival program, billboards and more. We illustrated the posters for 2005-2007. We've incorporated illustration from contributing artists into the design of the poster and supporting material every year of the festival, ensuring that they were in line with the brand guidelines.

After five years, we guided the organization through a rebranding exercise. The original name of the festival was too long, too restrictive, and no longer accurately described the scope of the organization. We went through a branding exercise with several members of the staff and board that led to the new name and an organizational system for the identities of the different programs that had developed out of the initial concept. We developed the brand strategy and identity which allowed them to have an expandable system. SYRFILM became the parent brand for all of the sub-brands, including SYRFILM Fest, SYRFILM Office, and SYRFILM Events.

Updating SYRFILM's web presence was our next mission. More information needed to be available to their audience to encourage more participation in the festival. They needed to project a more professional presence for film makers to attract more established artists and higher quality films. The architecture of the new site was designed for brand elasticity. It's designed to house each year's SYRFILM Fest, SYRFILM Office, SYRFILM Events, and all that is yet to come from Owen, Christine, and their team in Syracuse. The most developed part of the site is dedicated to the festival; it contains trailers and detailed information pages for each film, and all of the films are searchable by various criteria. The site was designed to  include a robust scheduling and calendar section to allow visitors to see all the shows playing at all the different theaters around the city. It includes a personalized section that lets users create their own calendar for the festival, choose films to see, save favorites, and more.

The Nuanced Relationships

As SYRFILM has grown, our process in working with them has evolved. Our first years of working together required us to educate their staff about working with a design team. We brought folks up to speed on everything from the ins and outs of print production to web architecture and planning ad buys. Over the years, we've witnessed the growth of the organization. We're intimately aware of where they are. We're sensitive to their unique challenges and try to adapt our recommendations to them to fit their scale. We try to help them maximize, to get the biggest bang for their buck because we want to see them grow. We love their mission and their commitment inspires us.

Mutual Gratification

We've helped a very grassroots organization that had limited funds and resources project a strong image that has helped establish the festival and strengthen its reputation both among its local audience and in the independent film world. It has been so rewarding to attend the festival every year. We've had the opportunity to interact with the film makers, the wide range of people involved in producing the event and the local folks who make up much of the audience. We hear directly from all of the stakeholders to learn how the work is received, and we apply our knowledge to the following year. Hyperakt and SYRFILM have grown up together over the last six years, we've learned about the complexities of developing an arts organization and they have challenged us to deliver design that will push them into their future.
