Confused?
What is Hypermarket?Hypermarket is a design shop and showroom. The shop features innovative furniture, products and apparel created by independent designers. Who is behind it?Hypermarket is a Hyperakt project. Founded in 2001 by Parsons School of Design grads Deroy Peraza and Julia Vakser, Hyperakt Design Group is a graphic design studio based in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Hyperakt creates distinct branding, print and web initiatives for clients in the arts, education, real estate and tourism industries. We love what we do and we have fun while doing it. As Hyperaktivists, we believe meaningful design can sharpen communication, captivate audiences and improve our environments. Commercial work aside, Hyperakt is also involved in Art4Now and AGAST, community based projects that promote the arts. Co-founder Deroy Peraza is an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design. Why is a graphic firm opening a retail space?Lots of reasons. Because having beautiful, clever stuff around us enriches our work. Because we spend lots of time staring at computer screens and its nice to think about design in three dimensions for a change. Because its a venue to meet and collaborate with great designers in different fields, and with talents different than ours. Because it's an opportunity to give these independent designers an outlet for their work. Because it tempts us to venture into creating products of our own. Because we are excited to be part of Brooklyn's thriving creative community, and feel like it needs more venues that give the public at large a chance to see what's going on in the local design scene. Because our studio happens to be in a storefront space on Smith Street, which has become one of Brooklyn's hottest shopping and dining destinations. Because we like meeting people like you. Told you there were lots.
Where is it?Hypermarket is located at 401 Smith Street, which is between 3rd and 4th Streets in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. We are diagonally across the street from the Carroll St. stop on the F and G trains. If you are coming from downtown Manhattan, it'll take you about 20 minutes to get to us. We are the last retail space on the southern end of Smith Street. Its a bit off the beaten path, but well worth it. What are the shop's hours?Hypermarket is currently open Saturdays and Sundays from noon-7pm. The shop is open on weekdays as well, but by appointment only. Where do you get your inventory? All over the place. Being a graphic design studio affords us the opportunity to meet and work designers in different fields. We feature several of our friends' products in the shop. Sometimes, we run into something on the web that excites us and we reach out to the designer. Mostly, designers contact us and introduce us to their work. We love it when the work is made in Brooklyn, but we don't discriminate. What kind of stuff do you carry?Currently, as you can see on our homepage, we are featuring furniture, apparel, jewelry, artwork, paper goods, lighting. However, we are always looking for new stuff! Our only criteria for selecting products: 1) It must be an example of excellent design, 2) We must love it, 3) It must be independently designed, 4) No other shop in the neighborhood (Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill) must carry it while we do. 4) It must fit in our space. Thats it. I'm a designer, and I want to sell my products at Hypermarket. What do I do?Check out the Selling at Hypermarket page. Can I buy products online? Not yet. We are still in beta mode, if you will. Some of our products would be kind of difficult to ship and we are not set up to do this yet. We're not saying it won't happen, though. For now, stop by and say hello. Do you take custom orders? It depends on the product and the designer. Just contact us and ask. Do you sale wholesale? Not presently, but we might consider it in the future. Do you accept credit cards?Yes. Mastercard, Visa, and Discover Card. Sorry Amex people. They're expensive. Why buy at Hypermarket?Because you will find unique, beautiful products, many of which are exclusively available at Hypermarket in New York City. Because you will be supporting the local creative and small business communities.
