Interview with Julia and Deroy on Startup Lab
Deroy and Julia are featured in a two part series on Startup Lab. They discuss how they and Hyperakt evolved, from their background as young illustration majors, with little experience in design and business, to the studio it is today. Julia and Deroy touch upon our relationship with Good Magazine, our work with nonprofits, and talk a bit as well about how we'd like to grow over the years to come. As they say, "we plan to put more emphasis on self generated work" - with a goal of more total creative freedom.

In Part 2 of the piece, Deroy and Julia describe in greater detail the ways that Brooklyn and NYC as a whole nurture designers, and give tips on how to be friends with your competition: "making enemies is counter-productive. It's a lot more fun to be able to share our experiences with each other and cheer each other on…If you're nice to your neighbor, they'll probably be nice to you." Finally, they share a core design tip - "Design things you believe in. It'll show in the work."
