Surviving on top in the Premier League

England’s Premier League (EPL) is considered by many to be the best football league in the world. This piece explains a concept that is common in the EPL, and football leagues around the world, but that is quite foreign to most American sports fans: promotion and relegation. At the end of each season the bottom three clubs of the EPL are sent down a level to the second division Championship. The top three clubs of the second division are promoted to take their place. Promotion and relegation have tremendous financial impacts on affected clubs.

This infographic for Fox Soccer lays out the history of EPL promotion and relegation, highlighting the clubs that have most often been sent down, and breaks down the costs that relegated teams face during their fist year out of the Premier League.
